Black Head Cow

Black Head Cow

An award-winning film, written and produced by Orkeeswa students. In a remote Maasai village in rural Tanzania, a young primary school girl is suddenly confronted by an arranged marriage.

Go behind the scenes of the awardwinning short film BLACK HEAD COW and hear the student-filmmakers speak about the process of making the film and sharing it with their community.

Naserian and her classmates decided they needed to stand up for girls’ education and speak out against forced early marriage in Maasai culture. Watch her TED talk to find out how they did this.

Note from the Filmmakers

“When we were making this film, we wanted to do something where the society could see what was happening to girls in the community. We wanted the film to bring questions to people: why does this happen in our society? Why was forced marriage imposed in this community? Where, when and how did it begin? And how did it become part of culture? When we ask those questions, they will see that girls are aware of what is happening to them and they really want to know why this is happening to them. The moment that elders, parents and community memebrs really understand the situation that early marriage puts girls into, that is a moment toward change.”
